Changing your mower’s engine oil is one of the best ways to ensure your machinery lasts a lifetime! However, if you’ve never changed your mower’s oil and filter before, you may not be sure how to get started. Thankfully, we’ve written up the helpful guide below to ensure you have no trouble figuring out how to complete a quick and easy oil change on your mower.

Setting Up

Before you pull your drain plug and set to work on changing your mower’s oil, you’ll first need to take a few moments to prep your work area. To start, make sure you have some old newspaper or a tarp laid down to catch any oil that splashes or spills out of your pan. You’ll also want to set down a few wood or concrete blocks to hold up your mower as you work. Finally, don’t forget to run your mower for a few minutes before you start to help the oil drain out more rapidly.

Getting Started

To ensure your safety, use a small socket and remove your mower’s spark plugs before you get to work. Once this is done, cut the engine and place your mower up onto your blocks. Locate your drain plug and place your oil pan directly beneath it. Using a wrench, go ahead and remove the drain plug bolt and allow all of the old oil to drain out into the pan below. Afterward, cajole your mower a bit to make sure all of the dirty oil has been drained. Using your wrench once again, remove the bolt holding the old filter in place and clean it—as well as the drain plug—with a bit of fresh oil. Remember to also soak your new filter in a bit of fresh oil before reinserting it into your mower. With the filter and bolt now in place, go ahead and reattach your drain plug and refill your mower with fresh oil.
